The Humanity of the Mission

Every day brings a new update of digital acceleration. It is followed by a chorus of whispers, “You have to do more! You are behind! If you don’t, who will?!” I am learning to identify the voice and it is not the Holy Spirit. God is not in a rush. He does not need to “catch up” or “keep up” with anyone or anything. His voice says, “Peace I leave you. My peace I give to you.” He invites me to, “Be still and know that he is God.” His unfailing promise reminds me that “his yoke is easy and his burden is light.” 

God has been reminding me lately that the Great Commission is not a complicated business problem to solve. It is not a technological challenge to be conquered. The Great Commission is a sweet invitation given to us by Jesus. He calls us to join him in the incarnational, embodied work of going to people, loving them, teaching them to follow the Good Shepherd. He made us a part of the body of Christ to do it with others–not alone. 

Digital plays an important role in the Great Commission, but it is not the most important element. The most important way to help people know and follow Jesus is to connect them to communities of faith or movements which are as close to them as possible. Digital can do that in powerful and amazing ways. We can reach the hardest to reach people as we to this important work together.
